Saudi Solar-Powered Amaala Project to Be Contracted By EDF and Masdar

Electric utility EDF and clean energy company Masdar have signed a concession deal for a multi-utilities infrastructure facility for Amaala luxury destination that is being developed on Saudi Arabia's north-western Red Sea coast and will run entirely on solar energy.

Amaala will be powered through an off-grid solar PV energy system backed by a 700-MWh battery energy storage solution to ensure an uninterrupted power supply. The solar park will have the capacity to generate up to 410,000 MWh per annum which is enough to cover the electricity needs of 10,000 households for an entire year.

The water supply in the tourist destination will be secured through a water desalination plant that will use reverse osmosis technology to process 37 million litres of water per day. The desalination plant as well as the wastewater treatment plant at the site will be powered also by renewable energy.

The 25-year concession agreement was sealed with project developer Red Sea Global (RSG) and includes the design, construction and operation of the systems.

Amaala, owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), is being developed as part of the Saudi Vision 2030 programme. It is RSG's second megaproject after The Red Sea a tourism destination on the kingdom's west coast 100 percent powered by renewables.
